Pechi Movie Review : Visually striking, narratively weak

Pechi Movie Synopsis:

Pechi Movie Review: Pechi stands out initially for its good visuals and ambience. The story follows friends Meena (Gayathrie Shankar), Charan (Dev), Charu (Preeti), Jerry (Mageshwaran), and Sethu (Jana) on a weekend trek with their guide Maari (Bala Saravanan).

At the trek's start, a forest guard stares at the women and gives Maari a meaningful nod, hinting at something mysterious. Tensions rise between the group and Maari due to his constant warnings about forest dangers, which annoy them.

The group discovers a hidden warning sign for a restricted area. Maari's warnings fall on deaf ears and the group enters. Charu and Sethu explore an old house, finding a voodoo doll of an old lady. This awakens the Pechi (Seeniammal), leaving one of them severely affected. The rest of the film explores the forest's curse and the reasons behind these events. It features unusual horror elements like doppelgangers, unexplained movements, invisible forces, and strange noises.

The director deserves credit for choosing a dense hilly forest location, which effectively becomes a character itself, enhancing the eerie atmosphere. The film also avoids typical horror tropes despite its supernatural plot. However, Pechi's backstory lacks clarity and could have been more tightly narrated for greater impact.

Gayathrie Shankar excels in her well-written role, while the rest of the cast delivers realistic performances. Bala Saravanan impresses with a measured performance, departing from his usual comic roles.

Technically, Parthiban's camerawork is outstanding, and Kumar Gangappan's art direction adds authenticity to the film. Pechi offers some chills but struggles in delivering a coherent supernatural tale.
