Deepavali Bonus Movie Review: Jeyabal's debut attempt, Deepavali Bonus, delves into the stark reality of lower middle-class families that struggle to make ends meet. The filmmaker wastes no time in establishing the premise, which revolves around its lead characters, Ravi (Vikranth) and Geeta (Rythvika). Set in a pre-Deepavali season, the story focuses on their daily chores and economic deprivation. It is their school-going son's joyfulness that keeps the couple going.
The city of Madurai is set to welcome the festival of lights while Ravi, who works for a courier service, relies on his bonus money. What Geeta earns as a maid is a measly amount, and the onus is on the former to earn a quick buck to make the fest a memorable one for the three-member family. However, the delayed bonus and a few unanticipated incidents spoil his plans.
With a simple plot and a handful of characters, the director achieves what he sets out to do to a good extent. The life of a poor, but happy family is convincingly depicted. The viewers are easily able to relate to their hardships. What could have been poverty porn becomes a representation of a realistic world as the measured performances from Vikranth and Riythvika elevate the filmmaker's material. The shorter run time is another plus point of the film which has no major distractions in the narration. The music, too, is adequate in conveying the mood of the multiple conflicts in the plot.
The story deals with the aspects of fate and luck determining one's ambitions. Some of the sequences that revolve around these facets help us root for the protagonist, who goes to any extent to keep his family happy.
On the downside, Deepavali Bonus suffers from a lack of a solid making style. The visuals are hardly appealing. A crucial revelation, revolving around a twist not being fleshed out, mars the otherwise engaging episodes. But the sincerity and believability with which the story is presented make up for these flaws. The film doesn't boast of an innovative storyline or treatment, but the portrayal of the family's little joys and their small beautiful world amid their concerns are fairly entertaining.
